Biography

David is currently pursuing his Doctoral Degree in Music Performance at the University of Oregon, School of Music and Dance. He is a student of Dr. Wonkak Kim. He is also the Graduate Employee Instructor of Clarinet where he assists Dr. Kim with teaching and administrative duties for the clarinet studio, and also teaches clarinet technique classes to the undergraduate music education majors.

David is a Yamaha Artist and plays on YCL-SE Artist Models Bb & A clarinets.

Teaching Experience

David taught clarinet and clarinet studio classes at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) as an adjunct principal study lecturer from 2019-22. He was also the teaching assistant to Mr. Joost Christiaan Flach, Head of Winds from 2020-21, where he led and conducted chamber ensembles, prepared wind ensembles for various conducting examinations and external performances. In the same academy, David was also regularly engaged to assist the Community Music module and Industry Based Learning module as an industry supervisor.

nonesuch. reedquintet

A core founding member and performer of the nonesuch.reedquintet (www.nonesuchrq.com), David serves as the secretary of the 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has performed all over the West Coast. The ensemble has embarked on many projects: Call for Scores 2023, Children’s Book, and most recently became guest artist ensemble at the Western Oregon University.

Clinics | Workshops

As clinician, David has taught masterclasses and presented workshops to private studios in Oregon and public organisations in Singapore such as nWinds (WINDS WEEKEND 2019), Singapore National Youth Orchestra (Clarinet Day 2022 ) and Yamaha (Clarinet Serenade 2023). David involves himself in community music workshops. As a group coordinator, he created a project with 3 other musicians and 10 seniors to present a performance at the SkillsFuture Festival @ Central Singapore CDC in 2019. In 2019, David led a clarinet trio and performed at a sing-along session at the Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) Community Home for Senior Citizens, in collaboration with Connexions International (CXI). In that same year, David prepared and presented a workshop at the Esplanade Concourse, where students learnt about different elements of classical music. The music, transcribed and arranged by him, was made available for the participating students of all wind instruments.

Online Presence

During the Covid-19 pandemic, David was regularly engaged for publicly accessible online forums and classes. With Stage Artistes, he alongside with clarinetist Jeremy Chua delivered a series of 4 weekly group clarinet lessons that even extended to participants tuning in from Malaysia. He was also invited to speak on ‘Online With the Pros’ by the Band Directors’ Association (Singapore). In 2022, David was invited by the Latin-American organization ‘Clariperu’ to put up an online bass clarinet recital and interview for their event, ‘La semana del Clarineto Bajo’ (Bass Clarinet week).
